THE HISTORY OF POST 90

Picture
In 1994, members of existing Explorer Programs approached several members of the Springfield Township Police Department about beginning an Explorer Program.  This idea was presented to then, Lt. Colonel David Heimpold.  Shortly after this idea was presented, Lt. Col. Heimpold was promoted to Chief of Police.  Seeing the Explorer Program as a positive way to build a relationship between the police department and the youth in the community, he began the steps to form an Explorer Post.

One of Colonel Heimpold's first accomplishments as Chief of Police was the founding of a Law Enforcement Explorer Program.  Together Col. Heimpold, the Springfield Township Board of Trustees, and the Dan Beard Council successfully began our post, self numbered as post #90 with 11 founding members.

The Explorer Program is organized through Learning for Life (a division of the Dan Beard Council) and is sponsored by the Springfield Township Police Department.  The program is designed to allow youths ages 14-20 interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement to receive an in-depth look at what the criminal justice field entails.  The explorers receive top-notch training in many different aspects of police work and are afforded the opportunity to accompany officers on their tour of duty.

Since it's founding in 1994, many former members of the Explorer Program have gone on to pursue their career in law enforcement.  Many of those members have been selected to work at the Springfield Township Police Department as officers.

The explorers compete annually in a local Law Enforcement Explorer competition held every spring.  The explorers consistently perform well and receive many awards in various events.  Additionally, the Learning for Life Organization hosts a National Law Enforcement Explorer Conference in even numbered years.  The conference brings explorers together from throughout the United States as they compete in various events, similar to the local competition.  The Springfield Township Explorers competed at nationals in 1996.  We then went back in 2002 and have participated ever since.  The members in 2002 did bring home a plaque for 5th place in Crash Investigation and in 2008, received a cerificate for scoring in the top 10% in the country in First Aid.  They continue to finish with high scores in the events in which they compete.
